There is more early interest in this steelhead season than we have seen for the past couple of years. We are gearing up to handle our regular clients and will have openings for new clients.
The Clearwater River is a major tributary of the Snake River, and it is entirely within the state of Idaho.
The cities of Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington are situated at the mouth of the river where all upriver migrating steelhead must pass on their way to the up river spawning areas or hatcheries.
We operate from these communities which are convenient to airports and major highways. Numerous quality lodging, restaurants and shopping is available for our visitors.
Idaho's Clearwater is a small to medium sized river with flows fluctuation both naturally and through water flows from Dworshak Dam. Water flows can be vary considerably but can be as low as 2400 to 2800 cps. This low flow situation presents a good opportunity for fly fishers to fish some of the better runs with ease.
Flows at this level can also present problems for boaters who are not familiar with the river. Water levels will fluctuate from fall rain and dam outflows. Late season freezing in the upper rivers may also cause a second low flow period but this is usually not as dramatic as the initial fall period.
Steelhead occurring in this river are both hatchery produced and naturally breeding wild fish from the upper tributaries of the Clearwater. Anglers may harvest only hatchery identifiable fish, those with missing adipose fins.
The Clearwater is well known throughout the country for it's large fish and open winter conditions. Unlike the Salmon River drainage the main stem Clearwater remains ice free due to the moderating effect of dam flows.
Wild fish should be treated with care and not removed from the water.
Guided fishing in the state of Idaho is controlled and regulated by Idaho Guides and Outfitters Licensing Board. There are a limited number of businesses that are allowed to operate on these waters. When booking trips for fishing in Idaho make sure you do business only with the legitimate licensed outfitter operating on the waters you wish to fish.
